This is the format your coursework will take:
Brief:
You have been asked to submit a Multimedia based proposal to the Derry City Council outlining possible redevelopment of the Fort George site (in preparation for London 2012).
Your proposal must be innovative and creative, and address the following key considerations:-

• Economically Sustainable (the development must generate revenue / help the local economy)
• Be Environmentally Friendly (use Green Energy where possible etc)
• Promote local culture
• Have 21st Century transportation links

Part 1) New Urban Transport System (N.U.T.S !?!)
*GROUP PROJECT*
In groups of 3/4, you must work with others in the class to:-
Research Urban Transport systems from around the world-- LUAS, Subway, Metro, T Line, Chicago suspended train?, Japanese Skinkansen, Eurotunnel etc-

Agree on an appropriate form of 21st Century Urban transportation for Derry (cross border links)
Compile a possible route map with possible stops / stations etc (2D Graphic)
Design & Create a prototype 3D Model of the transportation 'carriage' ie. what would people sit in? (3D Model)
Demonstrate a series of screenshots showing various aspects of the carriage / station. (2D Graphics)
Produce a 2-3 minute movie on DVD demonstrating all these aspects (Group Project)

You must show evidence of communication and contribution to the group.

Part 2) INDIVIDUAL LAND REDEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL

You must create 2D storyboard designs for your Fort George Redevelopment idea.

You must produce a 2 - 3 minute Movie using iMovie:
The movie should showcase your idea and explain how this would fulfil each of the Key Considerations identified in the original project brief (above)

- Animated Video Walkthrough of your 3D Building(s)--> so you have to create your 3D model, then make a video showcasing it.
- 2D Graphics / Slides--> Showing your 3D model superimposed on the actual current landscape.
- Edited audio including music and voice narration.

Each group will produce 1 DVD with all their group's work on it e.g.

Our DVD Main Menu
- Student 1 Movie
- Student 2 Movie
- Student 3 Movie
- Student 4 Movie
- Group Movie (Transportation System)

Your DVD has an intended audience of Derry City Councillors, so should be presented as professionally as possible.

A panel of parents, students and local business figures will judge the DVDs at an evening Exhibition (Date To Be Confirmed) with awards being made for the best work produced.

*Your A3 Portfolio Folder will show evidence and explanations of how you used Multimedia software to satisfy the Project Brief*.

Homework:
Using a source OTHER THAN THE INTERNET (hint: Library, 'Living' supplements from newspapers etc), you must collect 3 examples of innovative building structures that you could use as inspiration for your own Fort George Redevelopment.
These could be images of buildings highlighting the construction materials used, concrete, glass etc.
One of these should highlight the use of 'green energy' in some way.
You must collect these examples for your portfolio, so photocopy them in the library / scan in etc

Over Halloween

1) You will create 3 prototype design sketches for your Final Piece (Proposed Fort George Development). Use Sketch Sheet 1.doc as your template.

2) You will use the previous posts on this blog to host your group Project discussions.

3) You will fill in the Mod10WriteupTemplate0708.doc describing all the work you have completed so far.

*Group Project Submission

Your groups *MUST* submit a completed Microsoft Producer Presentation for Friday 26th October.

You should divide up the work across all the members in the group.
Areas include:
- Slides (PPT)
- Graphics (GIMP / Photoshop)
- Audio (Audacity / Producer: Use http://audio.lgfl.org.uk/)
- Video (Microsoft Movie Maker / Producer "Capture" option)

These must all be made available and integrated into ONE MS Producer presentation.

Group Meeting (2)

Today you had a group meeting to decide on the 'best' 3D model produced by members of your group.
You will now use this model for the rest of the group project.

Next week you will work on producing a route map around Derry for your chosen method of transport.

We will also introduce Microsoft Producer as the software you will use to create a CD based presentation of your group work.

When considering targets for this year, you should be aiming for marks of 40/50 for coursework modules and 80/100 for the Module 7 written exam.
Similar marks for any AS resits.

HOMEWORK: Catch up on anything you are missing e.g. your blog (remember the check I did on Wed?).
* Your blog will be printed as evidence of your work for Parents' Evening.

Wednesday 3rd Oct: (Dbl)

Using the images you obtained of your chosen Method of Transport for your composite image, use Google Sketchup to create a 3D Model of a possible Train / Subway / Tram carriage you would like to see being implemented in Derry.

Screenshot front / back / side / top views of your model (You should have at least 4 screenshots saved in your area by the end of this lesson, along with the Sketchup file).

Thursday 4th Oct: (Dbl)

Using component objects, e.g. seats / tables, people, create the inside view of this carriage. Screenshot internal views of your carriage from different angles (at least 3).

Friday 5th Oct: (Sng)

Blog screenshots from Wed & Thurs (at least 7) and explanations of all work done this week. Use your blog to record WHAT you did and HOW you did it.

HW: Ensure all work up to date:

• Composite Image & Report - with Title, Table Of Contents, Table of Figures, Header / Footer, Section Headings, Fully Justified Text, Captions on all images.

*MAKING SPACE*

During this Module you will be dealing with a variety of filetypes and sizes.
High quality multimedia files take up a lot of memory, so you should:

• Get a blank CD R (recordable - or transfer it home using a USB stick)
• Archive your AS material from last year onto this CD and delete it from your area

Working on the Composite Image...

Gentlemen,

Please ensure you use good quality (high resolution) source images when choosing your material for the composite image.
If you use a low resolution image e.g. of a train and then try to scale it up in a higher quality image of Derry - IT WILL NOT LOOK GOOD. You will lose image quality.

Today you should continue working at:

• Producing the Composite Image(s)
• Documenting the process of creating the composite image(s)
• Answering the questions set yesterday.

UTS Group Meeting 2

Today you had your second meeting for the Urban Transport System group project.
You were given out Agendas and forms for recording minutes of your meeting.
Each role had to filled (Facilitator / Note Taker / Timekeeper).
These roles will change for further meetings.
You had to present and summarise the transportation research you did to your group.
This has to be kept in your group folder.

You were each assigned the action item "Produce Composite Image" to be completed for Wed 3rd Oct.

As well as the completed image (jpg), you must produce a report in pdf format explaining How you made your image. This report should be presented professionally, with title page, table of contents, table of figures (images with captions), use headings and be generally well presented.

You must identify the program you used to produce this image, along with alternatives and why you went with this package.

You must identify each of the advanced software features you used, layers, alpha channel, magic wand tool, scale tool, shear tool. This evidence should be in the form of annotated screenshots. You should upload these to your blog as you go along.

What file formats did you use (original source images, 'working' images, final version).
Should be jpg -> xcf -> jpg.

Using Google Sketchup TASK

You were to familiarise yourself with the program below, by creating an mp3 player or house.
You should have used a variety of the tools available in the package.
Copy and complete the table in the Datapool: "GCE Applied ICT\A2\Module 10\0708\Using Google Sketchup\".

The completed version (including screenshots for EACH TOOL) must be:

• Saved / Printed as a PDF FILE (e.g. EB_gglsktchp_task.pdf)
• Handed to me this *FRIDAY* on your Module 10 USB stick

Welcome to Module 10 !!!

Welcome to Year 14 Applied ICT.
We received very positive feedback for last years' Module 10 Multimedia work, and we are aiming to improve on that this year.

I will try to get school account problems sorted this class.

To begin: Start the Sketchup program (Start > Programs > IT1 Freeware > Google Sketchup).

Go to "Help > Self Paced Tutorials > Intro" and work through the tutorial experimenting with the different features of the software.

1) Once you have completed this tutorial, try to build a 3D iPod or other object.
2) As an extension, try building a house, complete with brick walls, garden & fence etc...
You can experiment with adding text etc to your scene

3) Save your work as a ".skp" file.
4) Export an image from your model using File > Export > 2D Image.
Save this image in your "Module 10" folder.

Now log in to your Blogger account and create a post describing the different tools / features available e.g. select, orbit, rotate, push/pull etc.
Upload the image of the 3D model you created earlier.
