PROJECT UPDATE

This project has now closed.
The blog will remain for information purposes only.
The latter stages of the online communication element of the project were moved to our school VLE in November 07.

To date the student projects have all been completed.
We have had representatives from ILEX (the body responsible for the actual Fort George redevelopment) come into school to view the DVDs produced, after they came across the TalkNI contributions made by our students:

The feedback on the work produced was very positive indeed!

Brief:
You have been asked to submit a Multimedia based proposal to the Derry City Council outlining possible redevelopment of the Fort George site (in preparation for London 2012).
Your proposal must be innovative and creative, and address the following key considerations:-

Economically Sustainable (the development must generate revenue / help the local economy)
Be Environmentally Friendly (use Green Energy where possible etc)
Promote local culture
Have 21st Century transportation links

Part 1) New Urban Transport System (N.U.T.S !?!)
*GROUP PROJECT*
In groups of 3/4, you must work with others in the class to:-
Research Urban Transport systems from around the world-- LUAS, Subway, Metro, T Line, Chicago suspended train?, Japanese Skinkansen, Eurotunnel etc-

Agree on an appropriate form of 21st Century Urban transportation for Derry (cross border links)
Compile a possible route map with possible stops / stations etc (2D Graphic)
Design & Create a prototype 3D Model of the transportation 'carriage' ie. what would people sit in? (3D Model)
Demonstrate a series of screenshots showing various aspects of the carriage / station. (2D Graphics)
Produce a 2-3 minute movie on DVD demonstrating all these aspects (Group Project)

You must show evidence of communication and contribution to the group.

Part 2) INDIVIDUAL LAND REDEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL

You must create 2D storyboard designs for your Fort George Redevelopment idea.

You must produce a 2 - 3 minute Movie using iMovie:
The movie should showcase your idea and explain how this would fulfil each of the Key Considerations identified in the original project brief (above)

- Animated Video Walkthrough of your 3D Building(s)--> so you have to create your 3D model, then make a video showcasing it.
- 2D Graphics / Slides--> Showing your 3D model superimposed on the actual current landscape.
- Edited audio including music and voice narration.

Each group will produce 1 DVD with all their group's work on it e.g.

- Student 1 Movie
- Student 2 Movie
- Student 3 Movie
- Student 4 Movie
- Group Movie (Transportation System)

Your DVD has an intended audience of Derry City Councillors, so should be presented as professionally as possible.

A panel of parents, students and local business figures will judge the DVDs at an evening Exhibition (Date To Be Confirmed) with awards being made for the best work produced.

Using a source OTHER THAN THE INTERNET (hint: Library, 'Living' supplements from newspapers etc), you must collect 3 examples of innovative building structures that you could use as inspiration for your own Fort George Redevelopment.
These could be images of buildings highlighting the construction materials used, concrete, glass etc.
One of these should highlight the use of 'green energy' in some way.
You must collect these examples for your portfolio, so photocopy them in the library / scan in etc

Using the images you obtained of your chosen Method of Transport for your composite image, use Google Sketchup to create a 3D Model of a possible Train / Subway / Tram carriage you would like to see being implemented in Derry.

Screenshot front / back / side / top views of your model (You should have at least 4 screenshots saved in your area by the end of this lesson, along with the Sketchup file).

Thursday 4th Oct: (Dbl)

Using component objects, e.g. seats / tables, people, create the inside view of this carriage. Screenshot internal views of your carriage from different angles (at least 3).

Friday 5th Oct: (Sng)

Blog screenshots from Wed & Thurs (at least 7) and explanations of all work done this week. Use your blog to record WHAT you did and HOW you did it.

Gentlemen,

Please ensure you use good quality (high resolution) source images when choosing your material for the composite image.
If you use a low resolution image e.g. of a train and then try to scale it up in a higher quality image of Derry - IT WILL NOT LOOK GOOD. You will lose image quality.

Documenting the process of creating the composite image(s)

UTS Group Meeting 2

Today you had your second meeting for the Urban Transport System group project.
You were given out Agendas and forms for recording minutes of your meeting.
Each role had to filled (Facilitator / Note Taker / Timekeeper).
These roles will change for further meetings.
You had to present and summarise the transportation research you did to your group.
This has to be kept in your group folder.

You were each assigned the action item "Produce Composite Image" to be completed for Wed 3rd Oct.

As well as the completed image (jpg), you must produce a report in pdf format explaining How you made your image. This report should be presented professionally, with title page, table of contents, table of figures (images with captions), use headings and be generally well presented.

You must identify the program you used to produce this image, along with alternatives and why you went with this package.

You must identify each of the advanced software features you used, layers, alpha channel, magic wand tool, scale tool, shear tool. This evidence should be in the form of annotated screenshots. You should upload these to your blog as you go along.

What file formats did you use (original source images, 'working' images, final version).

Welcome to Year 14 Applied ICT.
We received very positive feedback for last years' Module 10 Multimedia work, and we are aiming to improve on that this year.

I will try to get school account problems sorted this class.

To begin: Start the Sketchup program (Start > Programs > IT1 Freeware > Google Sketchup).

Go to "Help > Self Paced Tutorials > Intro" and work through the tutorial experimenting with the different features of the software.

1) Once you have completed this tutorial, try to build a 3D iPod or other object.
2) As an extension, try building a house, complete with brick walls, garden & fence etc...
You can experiment with adding text etc to your scene

3) Save your work as a ".skp" file.
4) Export an image from your model using File > Export > 2D Image.
Save this image in your "Module 10" folder.

Now log in to your Blogger account and create a post describing the different tools / features available e.g. select, orbit, rotate, push/pull etc.
Upload the image of the 3D model you created earlier.

Easter Holiday Work

Over the holidays you will complete the following tasks:
1) Storyboard your Final Commonwealth Judo Tournament 2006 Video
Use the photocopied storyboarding sheets
You must identify where the following will be used:

video clips
still images
titles
overlays
transitions / effects
audio
narration

You should be able to view the footage and stills available on the CD distributed on your PC at home or in a library.

You will ensure that you are ready to get straight into creating your MovieMaker video as soon as we come back from the Easter break.

2) Create a CD / DVD Case Cover for your Commonwealth Judo Championships 2006 Video.

You will have to edit a selection of the digital images you all obtained, and add a suitable logo / title to produce an appropriate CD cover.

You can use Photoshop in school / at home if you are comfortable with it. If not there is a graphics editing program called PortableGIMP on the CD that you should be able to run off the cd and save your work to harddrive / usb stick.

You will have to explain and justify the image formats you use to work with and save your cover image.

I will post links to GIMP tutorials here.

3) You will ensure that you have contributed to discussions about what still / video footage to take in your groups (leave comments on a post for this on your project manager's blog).

Once the video is completed, we will then begin creating your Final Piece using MS Producer.

This will contain evidence of ALL your audio / video / digital image creations, along with PPT slides and audio narration of what you have created and learned from this module.

Use this time as effectively as possible as there is not much time left after Easter.

This is made up of:

The Podcast MP3 file (called 'A01234_Mar06_podcast.mp3') saved to your datapool area.
A completed storyboard reflecting ANY CHANGES to your original plan (uploaded as another series of images).
A completed script for your blog, outlining EXACTLY what you say, highlighting any difference to your original planned script.
A post to your blog giving a general desciption of your podcast and how you made it. This will also describe your intended audience and how your pocast is specifically targetted at this group of people. You will describe the production process that you followed, and mention you you legally obtained music to include in the production.

Audio Practical Work

Now that you have chosen your Coursework Theme, I would like you to browse around http://audio.lgfl.org.uk/ and download different tracks you could use as part of your coursework.
Think about the themes involved in your chosen project.
There are sample sound effects in the Module 10/audio directory which you can also integrate with these tracks. This is just *practice* using Audacity, not part of your final audio production.
By the end of this lesson I would like you to have created a mix using three different tracks and at least three of the sound effects.
You should also have applied at least one effect eg fade out / in.

Take Screenshots of your work in Audacity and paste them into Powerpoint.
Annotate the screenshots in Powerpoint using text boxes, arrows etc explaining what you have done.
Export your Powerpoint slides as PNG files (choose the 'Every slide' option) and upload the images to your blog.
Export your file as an MP3 and save it in your datapool directory.

Today we will start working with Audio Files.
Work through the Audacity Tutorial (the sample files are in Module 10\Audio directory).

You will see that the file type we used was '.ogg'
Once you have completed the tutorial, go to http://www.vorbis.com/faq/
Create a Powerpoint presentation of at least 10 slides on the Ogg Vorbis Format.
Don't bother with animation and transitions etc - you will be exporting each of these slides as a JPEG and uploading to your blog.

Module Outline

This is an outline of the topics we will be studying in this module.

You will begin by reading through the Module 10 Handbook, taking note of the key areas we will cover.
